SIBU: Sarawak pepper is among the commodities with the best quality in the world, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
According to her, the quality of Sarawak pepper lies in its content, which is almost organic.
“Sarawak pepper is the best in the world, (as it) contains no pesticide and is almost organic,” she spoke at the closing of ‘Sayangi Komoditiku Bual Bicara Latihan & Kerjaya’ at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Mukah Campus near here yesterday.
According to Dr Wan Azizah, she had always been promoting Sarawak pepper besides cocoa, palm oil and several other key commodities, when meeting up with other leaders during her official overseas duties.
However, she said in cases like palm oil, there were certain quarters carrying out smear campaigns to paint a negative image on certain commodities which in the end, proved to be untrue.
Meanwhile, the programme at UiTM Mukah was intended to add value to the main commodities in Sarawak, as well as highlight the importance of collaboration with institutions such as UiTM, technical colleges and schools in improving the job marketability of youths.
Deputy Minister of Primary Industries Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin also spoke at the function.
Some 1,500 students of UiTM Mukah, Mukah Polytechnic as well as from secondary schools around the district attended the programme.
